Proposal Fine Art Photography-
Nathan Hurst Unit 57 Photography and Photographic Practice Working Title-Fine Art Photography Purpose-Fine art photography is images used to capture reality through the eyes of the photographer or artist. Most fine art photography is used to be displayed in exhibitions such as Art and Photography expositions which images are displayed for non profitable reasons such as for Art and/or for charity. Fine Art photography is rarely used for commercial reasons therefore Fine Art is only displayed for artistic reasons. Deadline-9th November 2015 Audience- The intended audience for my Fine Art photography are people who are interested in art and photography that shows the reality of everyday life. Concept-The concept of my work is to capture reality through my images by taking photos of people in their everyday life committing various acts that are an occurrence during the day. The lighting i will be using will mostly be natural but possibly also using lamps to create light if the images become to dark especially if i decide to shoot at night. Location-The locations i will be using will be varied and non specific as i will take the images as they happen to create a natural feel to the images and prevent the images from looking too posed and unnatural. Quantity- I will be taking 3 images and will be at A4 size so the pictures will be able to be displayed and exhibited within college. Usage Rights- The majority of Fine Art photography is used for exhibition purposes rather than for commercial uses, therefore the photography i will be taking will be will be exhibited in college after 4 week shooting schedule and deadline. Fees-Fine Art is meant for the photographer to express themselves therefore no fee charged as they work primarily for themselves, This means i will be charging no fee for my work as i will be exhibiting my work in college. I will incur no cost during my time taking the photos. Proposal Architecture photography-
Nathan Hurst Unit 57 Photography and photographic practices Working Title-Architectural Photography Purpose- The type of photography i will be creating will be architectural photography, This will require me to take several pictures of different buildings to be used for exhibition purposes within my college. Architectural photography is mostly used for commercial use such as for estate agents to try and sell houses or to promote and generate tourism (hotels, tourist attractions etc.), although this is architectural photography this type of photography is only used for commercial use therefore the photography does not to be visually stimulating or engaging whereas photography being used for exhibition purposes such as mine will give viewers something interesting and pleasing to look at. The reason behind why i am choosing Architecture it presents how man made structures can be pieces of art and look beautiful, The types of structures that i will be using in my project will be blocks of flats, office blocks, cathedrals and churches etc. Deadline-9th November 2015 Audience-My intended audience is people who are interested in architecture and structures of buildings and people appreciate art and photography Concept-The style of my images will be photos of various buildings displaying their scale and size through different camera angles and techniques, There will be no people present within the photographs due to the images only displaying the structure and size of buildings therefor there will be no people in the pictures. All of the images will use natural lighting to capture some reflections from the sun on some of the more modern buildings. Locations-The location i will be using will be various places around manchester and Blackpool such as cathedrals, churches and different types of buildings around and in the city centre. Due to the locations i will be using recces will be required as i will be shooting in public places therefore there are possibly several safety hazards that could possibly occur during shooting. Quantity-The number of photographs i will be taking will be three at A4 size once they have been printed. Usage rights-The photographs will be used for exhibition within my college so that people can come and view them, my images could also possibly be use at art and photography expositions to also be exhibited. Fees-For the work i will charge £650 to any where over £1000 if the images are being used for commercial use such as working for architectures who would like to exhibit the house or building, Due to the type of architectural photography i will be taking the images will be exhibited in college therefore no charge will be present for the work and no cost will occur other than train fair to travel to the locations. Proposal Landscape photography-
Nathan Hurst Unit 57 Photography and photographic practice Working Title-Landscape Photography Purpose-The photographic application to be used is photography involving images of Landscape, The purpose is to capture the beauty of nature and is part of my assignment to create images that will be used for exhibition and more generic simple types of landscape photography could possibly be used for commercial use such as promotion for places that travel agents are trying to generate tourism for. Overall landscape photography is mainly used for exhibition at an art and photography exposition. Deadline- 9th November 2015 Audience-My intended audience are people who are interested in landscape photography or travelling in general due to the images capturing Beautiful landscapes that people would possibly visit or want to display in their house or view at exhibitions involving various different types of photography. My intended will also be people that have a love for art and photography and appreciate amazing landscapes. Concept-The concept of my work is to capture vast landscapes such as hill formations and lakes to exhibit how beautiful nature is and how surreal nature can be, The lighting I will use will all be natural to contrast with the different landscapes and to prevent the image looking to commercial by using studio lighting therefore using natural lighting will stop this from happening, The majority of the images will have no objects or people present within the picture due to the images being about nature and the various formations nature has to offer Location- For this project I will use several different locations to capture a wide array of different images using landscapes. The first location I will use will be at Dovestone reservoir, this location will allow me to capture amazing images of the reservoir and the surrounding landscape. The second location I will use will be Etherow Park; Etherow Park provides me with amazing scenery and landscape that I believe will look beautiful for my project. Etherow gives me a mixture of peaceful lakes and graceful greenery allowing me to take some amazing shots. Quantity-I will be producing three photographs each being a different variety of landscapes photography and will be in A4 size so they can be used for exhibition. Usage rights-The photographs will be used for exhibition within the college after the 4 week shooting schedule and after the deadline. Fees-For commercial use the cost can range from £100 to £675 depending on how long the photographer will be present and working. The images I will be taking will only be used for exhibition purposes therefore there will be no charge for the work and other than petrol for transport no cost will incur. Fashion Irving Penn Irving Penn is a famous American photographer who is well known for his work with fashion photography, portraits and still lifes. Below is an image of Truman Capote, an american screenwriter and actor which was taken by Irving Penn and printed in 1965. The image uses a black and white colour scheme with a slight yellow tint which i believe he used to bring the image of the page to create a bigger impact for the viewer and make the image stand out. The picture is also a medium close up of Truman Capote where you can see facial expressions and hand gestures, this gives the image a more emotional impingement as it creates an emotive feel to the image due to the viewer being able to see how the subject is feeling through facial expressions and hand gestures which connect the viewer with the image. Within the image you can see Truman Capote looking as though he is in deep thought and is thinking intensely whilst holding a pair of glasses close to his face, I believe this is to show and correlate with Truman's career as a screenwriter and actor due to Truman having to create screenplays which could possibly be a very challenging and stressful process therefore the image is expressing stress and intense thought through hand gestures such as having his finger pressed against his temple. Truman's facial expression could also represent him thinking of ideas for a screenplay. The glasses in the image possibly represent reading and writing scripts and that the glasses symbolise work and the reason for the glasses being removed from Truman's eyes is that he is taking a break from working due to work being too stressful or working too hard and represents having a very strong work ethic, which corresponds with Truman's facial expressions of being tired and possibly stressed. Truman fills the whole image creating a tight, closed in feeling due to there being very little or no spacing between Truman and sides of the image i believe the claustrophobic feel of the image is to symbolise how truman Truman feels such as being closed in within the tight frame representing the stressfulness and the vast amount of work Truman has to deal with day to day therefore the lack of spacing within the images represents Truman's state of mind as Truman is an actor and screenplay writer which can be stressful. Truman's hands also appear big and are close to Truman's head, I believe Irving chose to show the head and hands together due to both being an important part of Truman's career as a screenwriter such as using his head to create screenplays and his hands to type screenplays, Truman's chest and shoulders are dark in comparison to the hands and face allowing the viewer to focus on the hands and face to express emotion and symbolise Truman's career. Irving Penn uses three types of lighting, side lighting from the left, Above lighting and back lighting from the right. Side lighting is used from the right of the frame therefore darkening the right side of the face by creating a shadow and lighting the left side of the face and body, The lighting which is used above Truman lights the front of his face creating a fuller brighter image which prevents the shadow covering too much of Truman's face, Back lighting is also used to light the back of the image to contrast with the side light as the side light brightens the left of Truman's face whereas back lighting brightens the right side of the frame and darkens the left side therefore contrasting with the side light. Lighting focuses the audiences attention on Truman's face and hands due to the hands and face being the most important part of the image. The reason i like this image is due to the way the picture has been taken with the hands and face filling the frame creating a three dimensional effect and having a vast emphasis on emotion through facial expression that the viewer can connect to. Documentary/Photojournalism- Eddie Adams Eddie Adams is a famous American photojournalist known for his coverage of the Vietnam war and several others. The image below was taken on the 5th of May, 1968 during the Vietnam war. The content of this image is of several young vietnamese males stopping to look at a dead body of a Viet Cong who was killed during a days long fight. Eddie Adams takes images that focuses on powerful emotional impact due to the images showing the reality and devastation of war which aim to effect and shock viewers to show the real side of war rather than showing glamourised images that could possibly be shown through the use of propaganda to people unaware of what the nature of war is like. The camera is placed level with the body on the ground whilst creating a long shot, i believe this shot type is used to make the viewer see how destructive war can be on a person due to the facial expressions on the people surrounding the dead body looking as though they have been affected greatly as they have become desensitised to war and are used to seeing dead bodies. The image also focuses on the people around the body rather than the body itself due to the Viet Cong soldier looking away from the camera focusing the viewers attention on the people which shows how war has affected them but also still shows the dead body they are looking at symbolising the affect of the Vietnam war, The picture was also taken behind the dead body to take away the viewers attention as they are not focusing on the soldiers face but the people around him. Eddie Adams has placed the camera close to the soldiers hand which i believe symbolises the idea the soldier is reaching out for help to the viewer, the hand also is metaphor for the soldiers and people wanting the war to end as the dead body is reaching out for help therefore letting people know that war is horrific and needs to end. The image uses natural lighting coming from the right side of the frame, Natural lighting adds rawness to the image whereas artificial lighting would create an unnatural and unreal effect taking away from the emotional impact of the image. Black clouds are slowly forming to the left of the image therefore representing the darkness of war and correlate with how the people looking down at the body feel and to correspond with the dead Viet Cong such as the clouds being a symbol of evil and death and the body being a product of war which is evil and devastating. Depth is also created by placing the bodies hand in the foreground of the picture with the body further back into the picture using the Viet Congs arm which is extended to allow the image to create depth allowing the viewer to connect with the image as the image looks as though you could potentially be there rather than having a two dimensional effect which i believe adds to the picture. The people in the image are also placed behind one another from right to left and are seemed to be placed further back the further left you go therefore creating more depth. Rule of thirds is also used to create depth and scale within the image, Rule of thirds is used by splitting the image into sections such as the body being in the lower third taking up the majority of the bottom of the frame therefore making the body seem to have a much larger and vaster scale to the other subjects in the image due to the body being the focal point of the people in the image. The sky fills the upper and middle third to give the image a more fuller and extensive feel, the people within the image are placed in the middle section and partly in the upper section of the frame so the viewer is able to focus and capture the emotion of the people as they look down onto the body. I also feel that the people are also made to look smaller than the rest of the image to show war is bigger and more powerful than they are, this can be seen through the vast black clouds and the scale of the body which are both representing war. Black and white is also used in the image to make the impact of the picture more effective due to war not being colourful but dark and depressing. A black and white colour scheme also brings out the darkness of clouds and colour of the blood on the soldiers body, The clothing of the people around the soldier are all white representing purity due to them not being soldiers whereas the colour of the soldiers clothing is dark to represent impurity of war and how war has defilied and degraded the soldier resulting in the death of the Viet Cong. The reason i like this picture is because Eddie Adams uses powerful imagery to capture how desolate war makes people feel through emotions and how awful and horrific war is. I also like the use of scale of making the soldiers body and clouds look greater than the other people in the photo, which i believe creates a metaphor for war being this colossal force that is devastating and hard to stop greatly affecting people it comes into contact with. Fine Art- Richard Billingham Richard Billingham is an English photographer from Birmingham who is well known for his photobook 'Rays A Laugh' (1996) in which Billingham documents various images of his mother Liz and his father Ray both dealing with living in poverty. Richard Billingham created these images to show his depiction of living in poverty and how his family dealt living with under these circumstances. Richards Father Ray was an alcoholic and his mother was a heavy chain smoker and obese which are shown clearly through Richard Billingham's photography, Although at first these images look as though they portray Richards parents as poor, Loathsome people, i believe that his parents have somewhat humorous unusual yet intriguing qualities which are shown in the image i chose below. The photo below is of both Richard's parents in which his mother is stood holding a cigarette and a drink which looks alcoholic with his father staring off into the distance. The reason i chose this image was how both of his parents look such as his mother looking as though she is trying to have a conversations with his father but just being ignored which i found to be slightly amusing, i also like the dark, unsettling colours which are shown in the images due to the colours looking gritty therefore relating to the poverty that is being shown through with these images.Richard Billingham used cheap film to create these dull, unfocused images which captures the harsh reality of his poverty stricken home. The colours are what i believe makes this image great due to colours such as the dark green wallpaper and the colours in the background bringing out the grittiness of this image and creates this unusual reality that viewers will be able to feel as though they can connect with his parents and possibly relate to the struggles of being in a situation Richard's parents are in due to the colours being so bold and real. The image also feels very natural rather than being an image that is being used for commercial and advertising purposes such as everything that is shown in the image hasn't been manipulated or moved to fit the picture but has been left the same way as prior to the picture being taken. Billingham has created a photo that captures reality by taking the image during his parents day to day life therefore adding to the natural feel of the image due to both parents looking as though they are unaware of the camera, The image looks as though Richard Billingham has used the cameras flash rather than studio lamps to create front lighting, The flash on the camera adds to the gritty, reality of the image as they look as though they have been taken for a family album or just taken randomly without any thought rather than being used for exhibition. The flash also also created an unnatural light due to the flash only creating light on his parents and the left side of the frame therefore creating a very dismal atmosphere as the right side of the frame is very dark and the parents are brightly lit therefore showing the viewer they are the main focus of the image. The lighting also corresponds with the colours as the light brings out the dullness of the wallpaper and other colours in the image, The lighting creates a very greasy, shiny look on the mothers face making his mother look filthy adding to the grimy feel to the image due to the greasy look of his mother correlating with the idea of poverty and the look and feel of the house. The mother and father are also dressed in clothing that are simple and ordinary that are possibly only worn for comfort to sit about in their house rather than clothing that is worn for going out therefore supporting the idea that both parents are living in poverty due to them possibly unable to work so they have nothing else to do other than stay inside their house, also there could be money to buy new, expensive clothing or both of the parents do not care about their image therefore only wearing what fits. Landscape/Nature- Ansel Adams Ansel Adams was an American photographer working from the 1920s through to the 1970s best known for his work with black and white photographs of nature and landscapes notably within Yosemite National park. Ansel Adams creates images of nature that capture the beauty and surreal qualities that nature has to offer through the use of black and white images and unusual formations that occur in nature. The image below is an example of Ansel Adams work that i find to be very surreal and odd yet very beautiful due to the vastness of the clouds protruding over the mountain tops capturing the power and graciousness of nature which i feel that the use of black and white has created the surreal look therefore making the image feel more bewildering and stunning. I believe the image uses natural lighting that is forming behind the cloud due to round the edge of the cloud having a border that is being created by light and on the left side of the frame there is an individual cloud that is being lighted from the right therefore being created by the sun behind the cloud. Ansel Adams has used natural lighting to keep the image natural and prevent the image looking to commercial which would potentially occur if the lighting was edited too much therefore removing the immense feeling of of the image and wouldn't look nearly as amazing. I believe that Ansel Adams would of possibly used a higher ISO due to the image looking dark in some areas around the border and at the top of mountain, An higher ISO was used to capture the light areas as well as bringing out the black and dark areas of the image which i feel contrast well with lighter areas allowing both the light and dark areas blend together, without using an higher ISO the Image would of possibly been to dark and left with patches of light and dark areas that would not contrast well with each other. The use of black and white has created a three dimensional effect that immerses the viewer in the image, This effect can been seen on the forefront of the clouds which look as though layers of dark and light sections have overlapped creating this three dimensional effect. The lighting also helps creates shapes and depth in the image such as the left side of the mountain face curving downwards towards the lake, The light shines onto the mountain face amplifying the shape of the mountain which i believe creates depth, whereas if there was very little lighting the image would be too dark to create this effect such as the mountain on the right side of the frame being a lot darker loosing the shape and curvature although the mountain is still visible the effect isn't the same. Ansel Adams has also used the Rule of Third technique allowing Ansel too create this open, vast landscape and cloud structure forming in the top half of the image. The bottom third of the image is the lake and the left and right side of the mountains, the large scale of lake creates depth allowing the viewer to look through the image whilst both sides of the mountain create a frame that focuses the viewer towards the back of the image to the mountain and clouds, The middle of third is of the top of the mountain that is at the back of the image and the top third is of the formation of the clouds. Both the middle and upper third focuses on the clouds and mountain to create a colossal feel to the image through the size of the cloud formation and how the rest of the image looks minor compare to upper half of the image. The clouds create a god like atmosphere which i feel symbolise a prison that is keeping something beautiful such as sunlight that is cased in darkness and trying to break free. Architecture-
Randy Scott Slavin Randy Scott Slavin is a well renowned, Award winning photographer/Director based in New York who creates surreal architectural photography using various and unusual techniques. Randy's photography experiments with panoramic methods to create concepts that are both engaging for the viewer but also surreal and fascinating. The image below is a photo of the Empire state building that has been shot using a panoramic effect which creates an alternate original look rather than just being a straight forward picture of the building therefore allowing the viewer to see the Empire state building through a different perspective and create a piece of art that is visually captivating. The reason i chose to analyse this image is due to the way the buildings look such as the buildings pointing towards the centre of the image instead of straight up which the photo would of looked like if the photo had been taken using generic methods of photography. The picture has been taken at the base of the Empire state building at a low angle to prevent the building looking to small and keep the colossal scale and power of the building. The top of the Empire state building is close to the centre of frame to emphasise the power and size of the building over the other surrounding buildings, I also believe that Randy has used lines to allow the panoramic effect of the image to work such as the parallel lines that have been used on the Empire state building to focus the viewers attention towards the building but also focuses their attention upward towards the top of the building. The buildings surrounding the Empire state building also focus the viewers attention towards the centre of the image to create this panoramic effect through using lines. The photo uses natural lighting that can be seen around the edge of the buildings, The light comes from behind the buildings therefore creating a yellow border around the edge buildings to contrast with the blue skyline and blends towards the centre of the image creating a beautiful effect that really draws the viewers attention in towards the image. The image feels very compact due to the look of the buildings creating a very tight border around the image and skyline which i feel adds to the surreal nature of the image and creates a very unusual effect and look, The compacted look of the buildings in this image could also possibly symbolise the how busy and alive New York is and the amount of people that live there. Photography today is used for various different purposes such as for art to be taken for personal or possibly for an exhibition, and commercial use to market products etc, but before photography was easily accessible for anybody to be able to capture images, Taking photos was a very difficult drawn out process due to digital technology not being developed therefore making photography difficult and expensive. Throughout this post i will be talking about the history of photography and how photography has developed over time. Before photography was available most images were either hand painted or sketched so being able to capture images using a camera and light was vastly revolutionary. Around a thousand years ago before the creation of cameras to capture images, the 'Camera Obscura' was used. 'Camera Obscura'; Meaning dark chamber, was a darkened box with a hole placed in one side of the box, the hole allowed light from outside to pass straight through onto a plain surface which the exterior scene will then look inverted when shown from inside the box, The 'Camera Obscura' led to the use and creation of photographic images and cameras. Below is an example of how the 'Camera Obscura' method was achieved using a darkened room. During the early 1800s chemical photography was being used allowing photographers capture permanent images. Although photographers were able to capture permanent Images the process was very time consuming taking up to eight hours for the images to expose. The earliest example of permanent photographic image was in 1826 by 'Nicephore Niepce' who was a French inventor, Below is that image. As you can see the photograph is of a building, sun light is reflecting off either side of the building leading to a bright image yet still capturing the shape and size of the building. Still using chemical compounds photographer Daguerre created a process called the daguerreotype in 1839 which reduced exposure time by half an hour creating clear and detailed images. Due to the images created using this process being very clear, photographers were often taking portraiture photographs of the deceased because the photos being vastly accurate to the subjects and people who the images were being taken of. From here photography began to become more and more advanced, after daguerreotype a process called collodion created by 'Frederick Scott' was being used around 1851. This process used a negative to positive process and produced much more crisp and sharper images than any previous method used to capture images Below is a photograph created using the collodion process The year 1888 was a benchmark in the development of photography due to the creation of the 'Kodak' camera by George Eastman. 'Kodak' cameras used celluloid film and was a portable piece of equipment, affordable to the public. From the development of the 'Kodak' camera, cameras became more practical leading to the invention of the 35mm camera by Oscar Barnack in 1905, The 35 mm camera also known as the 'Ur-Leica' used 35 mm celluloid film and was eventually used for cinema, film directors such as 'The Lumiere brothers' used the 35mm film for films such as 'Leaving the Factory'.
All this development lead to digital photography in 1986 becoming the most popular form of photography in modern day. Digital photography is able to capture high resolution images and allowing for a vaster number of pictures to be stored onto the camera without having to constantly change the film within the camera therefore being highly revolutionary. Health and safety is a very important issue in all forms of work and media, there are various health and safety procedures that can prevent any major accidents within the working environment. The following report will focus on health and safety surrounding the photo-imaging industry and how employees and employers should conduct themselves and handle responsibilities concerning health and safety to prevent accidents that could potentially harm themselves or of the employees. Employers main responsibilities are the health and safety of their employees when they are at work, This involves making sure that working environments are safe with no potential hazards especially when photographers are shooting on location which could potentially put employees at risk. All locations are risked assessed before any assignments has taken place to ensure the location is safe with no dangerous hazards. Although employers should make certain that all employees are safe whilst working, Employees should also take responsibility for their own care and safety and the people around them such as other employees. Photographers who are self employed still have to ensure that correct health and safety procedures have taken place when working to prevent themselves and the public becoming in risk of potential hazards that could be harmful. When on location there are several health and safety precautions and considerations that should be taken into account before beginning your assignment, these include having correct and valid employer and public liability insurance, Permission to take photos and have a formal agreement with the customer if required, ensure all equipment is safe, and produce risk assessments for locations you wish to shoot at. Employer and public liability insurance is is required when working for any company, When working as a photographer you could potentially injure yourself when shooting on location therefore hindering your ability to work depending on the severity of the injury, The employers insurance will cover the employee for any injury sustained and possibly give the employer compensation. Public liability insurance will cover anybody the employer engages with covering any damage or injury done to the person. Having permission to take pictures and having an agreement with the customer will prevent trespassing and possibly injury due to the customer being able to tell you if any risk assessments have taken place and if so what are the potential risks and what actions have been implemented to ensure safety. Equipment should also be checked before beginning any assignment to prevent any accidents occurring when working, Equipment such as lighting should be checked to make sure that any electrical faults with the equipment isn't going to cause any injury to the photographer or the people near the equipment. Lights should especially be checked when working in in a studio due to the confined space in which people will be working in causing the lights to be in close proximity to people, If lights are not checked prior to using them then there is no certainty that there is no electrical faults with the equipment therefore lights could cause potential fires and injury. Another important part of health and safety are risk assessments, Risk assessments are documents usually done during pre production that assess any possible health and safety risks that could occur when working on an assignment. Risks assessments also allow for solutions to the risks that are outlined which will prevent any accidents from occurring, An example of when risk assessments will be used is when working at a photography studio, various hazards such as lights and flammable materials should be put into a risk assessment and assess for the risks and the solutions that would help prevent any accidents. Below are two examples i completed of how you would use a risk assessment to asses potential risk and allow you to provide a solution and what risk assessments should look like if you were to use this type of document. The first image displays the types of risks and solutions for each of the 18 possible hazards which might occur when shooting out on location and as you can see the risk assessment also gives multiple examples of what information goes in each box such as the type of solutions you may need if any of the hazards were going to affect you in any way. The second image is a risk assessment that was used to survey a photography studio and should give you a broader idea of how a risk assessment should look once you have assessed the location where shooting is going to take place. The risk assessment shows ticks next to potential hazards and a solution written in the box to the right however where there is no possible hazards i have put a cross next to the hazard.
During todays task we experimented with depth of field by changing the aperture on the camera, We achieved this effect by taking images with several objects in a row and focusing on the center subject to create depth of field, using the camera we changed the aperture to put the central objects in focus whilst blurring out the surrounding objects which created depth of field. Below are several examples that i took using a digital camera that display what depth of field is.
