Modern Family
The final piece of TV I will be analysing is ‘Modern Family’ (2009) an American comedy mockumentary. ‘Modern Family’ uses a parallel narrative consisting of three families. Although the narrative is parallel therefore creating three sub plots, the narratives overlap creating one over arching narrative. An almost realist narrative is used through using a mockumentary format such as using interviews with the characters and the fly on the wall/documentary style cinematography which engrosses the audiences into the scene creating an alternate, light hearted reality to correspond with the comedic nature of the series. Cinematography used throughout ‘Modern Family’ is mostly hand held to add to the mockumentary style theme to the series. Static shots are also used within ‘Modern Family’, Static shots are used when the characters are being interviewed therefore focusing on the character’s dialogue. Establishing shots are also used when a different character’s house is being shown this shows the changing narrative and to allow the audience to understand where the next scene is taking place and to which family the narrative is going to follow. The lighting used throughout ‘Modern Family’ is bright and inviting to correspond with the humour and also the light hearted nature of the show.
